Continue reading the text and annotate it in the following way:
1. Underline all verbs in red. Verbs are doing or action words. Examples are, "turn, chop, walk"
2. Circle all adverbs in blue. Adverbs add to the verb's message by telling how to do things. Examples are, "carefully, fast, slowly"
ACTIVITIES: choose one of these activities.
Write directions telling a new student how to get from our classroom to another part of the school. Don't tell them where that place is in your directions till the end. You can write them in a secret place. Your title can be "How to get from the 5/6 area to ..............................."
When you have clear instructions, give them to a partner to read and follow. Again, don't tell them where they are going. Did your partner end up in the right place? Were your directions clear? Was your partner able to follow them? Get your partner to write a comment about your instructions under your procedural text.
OR
Do the "Listen Carefully" activity on the back of your procedural writing, "Come to My House" sheet. 1.Work with your partner. 2. Direct your partner from an agreed starting point on the map to another point on the map. 3. Use a coloured pencil to mark the route on the map. Your partner should also mark the route on their map but make sure you cannot see each other's maps till the very end. 4. Compare maps. Did your partner follow your directs exactly?
Swap roles and this time listen as your partner tells you the directions to follow. Use a different coloured pencil to mark the route on the map.
